Who We Are

Myles is our faculty advisor as well as an electrical engineer and academic advisor for NC State’s Engineering First Year Program. When invited for this opportunity to merge engineering and sustainability with servant leadership, social justice, and travel, he could not resist! He strives to support students’ success and their ambitions through education inside and outside of the classroom.

Jackson is our team leader and currently a Junior at NC State studying Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Renewable Electric Energy Systems. He has been planning this experience for NC State since his freshman year along with the help of many helpful people within CSLEPS and in NC State’s Sustainability Office. He aspires to one day own and operate an organisation that allows renewable energy sources to more easily be instantaneously accessible to the grid.

Amanda is a sophomore studying civil engineering with a Spanish minor. Her ultimate career goal is to become an imagineer for Disney and maintain its slogan of “happiest place on earth” by making sure we have a happy earth to continue contributing to. The eye opening insight gained on this trip is only one step in sharing what just one person (and one team) can do!

Chad Kibbe is a junior studying Environmental Technology and Management with minors in Environmental Science, Environmental Toxicology, and Renewable Energy. He initially applied for the trip because of his deeply-rooted interest in sustainable energy practices. Upon graduation, Chad plans to pursue a career in the renewable energy industry, working to promote the use of renewable and clean energy.

Danielle Wheeler is a sophomore in Mechanical Engineering. Danielle is interested in conserving the environment because she’s from the mountains of North Carolina and would hate to see the vegetation disappear (except the kudzu). She also wants to help impoverished communities and their infrastructure.

Jonathan Schertz is this trip’s freshman. He is studying Computer Science and Psychology, hoping to use his technical degree to impact undeserved communities like that in Atascadero.

Katie is a Master’s student studying Environmental Engineering who in her free time *ha* works full time as a Coastal Engineer with an engineering consulting firm in Raleigh. Her long standing interests in renewable energy and service make this trip a perfect match for her passions.

I’m Elizabeth Wallner and I’m studying Environmental Engineering with a minor in Environmental Science. I’ve always been interested in sustainability and renewable technology in order to limit the human footprint. I hope to pursue a career in either wate

Megan is a Senior studying a mouthful of a degree: a Bachelor of Science in Fashion and Textile Management with a Concentration in Brand Management and Marketing and a minor in Art and Design. She hopes to pursue Marketing in the Fashion Industry with the intent to make it more sustainable.

Rachita is a sophomore at NC State studying Aerospace Engineering. She is interested in combining logic with creativity to make the world a better place. She hopes to learn more about renewable energy through this trip. What better way than helping people ?

Rosalynn is a sophomore studying Chemical Engineering with hopes to develop resource-conscious manufacturing processes. Last year, she attended a sustainability-focused service trip to Costa Rica, also through NC State University’s CSLEPS. Rosalynn is extremely excited for the opportunity to join the Solar Spring Break team in California.

Shane is a junior studying studying electrical and computer engineering. The SSB trip immediately peaked his interest due to his desire to find an intersection between EE and sustainable/renewable energy. He is very eager to participate because he hopes to make a difference in people’s lives. Shane describes himself as “a hopeless engineer”, however as long as he is helping people, he knows it will be worth it. 🙂
