Pre-Trip Thoughts by Katie Finegan

As an undergrad student I had the opportunity to go on a different alternative spring break trip, so now as a grad student I’m overjoyed to be able to participate in this experience again. One of the aspects I love most about this program is that it brings together what would otherwise be a complete group of strangers who all share a common desire to serve and in the case of our trip, a passion for the environment as well.

In high school I had an inspirational Environmental Science teacher that instilled in me my interest for all things sustainable. When it comes to renewable energy, I’m a bit obsessed. The number of pictures I have of solar panels and wind turbines from my travels might be considered embarrassing for some. Solar energy has so much potential; we are lucky to live in this exciting time to be able to witness it grow and develop. More importantly we can be involved in its development. For me, it’s a dream come true with this trip to have that involvement become ‘hands-on’ by actually installing solar panels. I’m excited to work alongside GRID Alternatives and my fellow teammates in this opportunity of a lifetime.

I know by the end of the trip I will have learned a lot about myself, my teammates, the community in Atascadero California, and probably a few things I didn’t expect to learn. As I anticipate our exciting journey ahead I keep reminding myself to savor every moment-even the planning and packing. :p
